Find Text — Fixed Phrase

This tool locates fixed phrases containing a user-specified word within an HTML document, located either at a user-specified web address or uploaded from the user’s files, and displays the phrases in a text-based, SVG graph or JavaScript format.

This tool was contributed to TAPoR by Academic Computing Services, New York University.

Please click the ? buttons at the bottom right of each set of options for more information on that set.

For further information on this tool, please see the TADA Wiki's Fixed Phrase entry here. A glossary of terms is also available here.

» Source text

This section determines the source of the document you wish the tool to process. Plain text can be obtained either from a web address or by uploading a file.

Source URL
To use content from a web page, enter a full web address (URL) ending in .txt in the field provided. Copy and paste from your browser’s address bar for best results.

Local file
To upload a plain text (.txt) file from your computer, choose ‘Local file,’ click ‘Browse,’ and select the file you wish to use from your directory.
» What to find

This section determines the word to search for, and the length of the context (in words) in which to situate that word.

Enter the desired word here (no patterns or regular expressions). The list of fixed phrases will be built around instances of this word.

Context length
Enter a number here to set the size of the phrase containing the word entered above. For example, in the phrase 'she sells sea shells by the sea shore,' a search around the word 'shells' with a context width of three might find the phrase 'she sells sea shells by the sea,' while a context width of one would find the phrase 'sea shells by' instead."
» Results

This section allows the user to choose the format of the aggregated text.
